What is GChess

Gchess is a free chess emulator program available for versions of Windows prior to Vista. It features an advanced level of difficulty suited to players who need a challenge.

Gchess has a simple interface; the developer opted for an accessible program that was capable of providing any player with a challenge. While it may not be the best program for teaching chess to a beginner, GChess has enough power to keep teachers guessing. The difficulty can be adjusted through two different channels. First, the player can restrict how many moves in advance the computer may consider. Second, the player can limit himself in a similar way by putting a time limit on his own turns. This is a good simulation of speed chess, which is not easy to find, especially for advanced players.

The game interface is quite basic. When the program runs, it automatically starts a game with the human player as white. The human can choose to become black using a menu, which is also where the difficulty adjustments are located. The program's simplicity belies the strength of the AI opponent.

I recommend a download of Gchess for anyone who is looking for a good, challenging computer chess game. While it is distinctly different from the experience of playing a real opponent, the convenience and speed of computer chess still makes it a valuable learning tool, not to mention fun. The most important downside of Gchess is that it may be difficult to find a computer that can run it. It is not compatible with versions of Windows after XP and 2003, neither of which has official support.
